A reminder of what is at stake: the fate of the planet.

Siberia’s rapid thaw causes alarm, BBC News, August 11, 2005
The world’s largest frozen peat bog is melting, which could speed the rate of global warming, New Scientist reports.
The huge expanse of western Siberia is thawing for the first time since its formation, 11,000 years ago.
The area, which is the size of France and Germany combined, could release billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
This could potentially act as a tipping point, causing global warming to snowball, scientists fear.

  1. … and for you global warming skeptics:

Errors found in analysis of data used to discount global warming
Andrew C. Revkin, New York Times
    Friday, August 12, 2005

Some scientists who question whether human-caused global warming poses a threat have long pointed to records that showed the atmosphere’s lowest layer, the troposphere, had not warmed over the last two decades and had cooled in the tropics.

Now, two independent studies have found errors in the complicated calculations used to generate the old temperature records, which involved stitching together data from thousands of weather balloons lofted around the world and a series of short-lived weather satellites.

A third study shows that when the errors are taken into account, the troposphere actually got warmer. Moreover, that warming trend largely agrees with the warmer surface temperatures that have been recorded and conforms to predictions in recent computer models.

The three papers were published Thursday in the online edition of the journal Science

  2. Once this accelerates there’s no going back. It may already be too late; ice ages seem to have only taken about 70 years to establish themselves. I don’t think anyone in the rest of the world has much doubt that serious climate changes are under way. Deserts are forming in Spain, where there used to be farming land, the polar regions are both in trouble, the weather in general is vastly more violent, and so on and so on. It’s only the crazed Bush administration that’s in denial and still looking for “proof’ that this isn’t happening. Could this be because they think it’s a sign of the coming Rapture and thus welcome it?

  3. “Only” the Bush administration? And thanks for posting the random debunk of right-wing propoganda. Debunk posts are always good.

  4. Ice and Global Climate Change

Via Real Climate, NASA continues to report not so good news about Arctic sea ice (emphasis mine): June marks the beginning of the melt season for Arctic sea ice, which reaches its minimum extent at the end of the season…

  5. This kind of info simply evokes black despair. So I skip over it, and continue my efforts to reduce or rollback the massive screwups for which we are responsible – and to reduce or rollback my OWN actions which are pushing the knife deeper into Gaia.

Or maybe I should just buy lakefront property in Siberia.

You know come to think of it, it’s siberia. Isn’t that just a bunch of ice? I think there’s more important things to worry about. Like how to pay for Cindy’s next meal.
