One Big Union

Go see the Pays Less In Taxes Than His Maid post and the video there. There is one PROVEN way to fight back and get something for working people and that is to join up with the people who brought you the weekend: a union.

Don’t complain about how good union people have it: vacations, health care, overtime, etc… JOIN A UNION! Duh!

  1. Unions do seem to still work well for occupations that are highly skilled. Screen writers, baseball players, hockey players, and etc. are able to go on strike and get their demands met.
The unskilled – housekeepers, fight attendants, SEIU members and etc. don’t seem to be well-served. To those people, I think your advice is harmful. You should advise those people to upgrade their skills.

  2. Unions actually work even better for ordinary people than for the highly skilled! Where do people get these weird ideas about unions?

  4. MJ – if it were true, then unions would not be declining. Unskilled workers are easily replaced, so when they form a union or go on strike – they simply lose their jobs. This is WalMart and McDonalds. Companies like these are not corrupt or evil, they just have leverage over their unskilled employees and they use it.
The screen writers are not easily replaced, so Hollywood doesn’t have any leverage. For this reason, the writers will probably be the winners in the strike.
The best bet for the WalMart employee: get skilled and get out of there. Don’t wait for unionization – it’s not happening.
