I received a mind-boggling e-mail spam from Republican Chairman Ken Mehlman. A part of it says,
Democrat leaders’ talk of censure and impeachment isn’t about the law or the President doing anything wrong. It’s about the fact that Democrat leaders don’t want America to fight the War on Terror with every tool in our arsenal.
Saying something this extreme is so far, far out of normal discourse, so cult-like, so just plain WEIRD, that I wonder how long they can keep using this kind of stuff? I mean, “the base” lets them talk like this because they think it will bring other people along — wink, nod… They understand that they don’t really mean it when they talk like this, they just say it for effect. They understand that it is all just propaganda.
But there can’t really be people who believe that the Democrats side with the terrorists and want us all killed, can there? To anyone who might actually take such talk seriously, I think that saying stuff like that is as close as there can be to a direct call for violence. “Those people are helping terrorists who want to kill your children.”
But it is Howard Dean who is called “extreme.”
